In their 2005 report, the Performance, Training, and Competency Gap Analysis, the Eppley Institute and the NPS “identified a significant need for additional training and education for facility managers. In addition, it was determined that the NPS was likely to experience, or was in the initial stages of experiencing, a severe shortage of qualified facility managers, due to retirements and increasing demands” (Facility Manager Leaders Program Course of Study, 2010).
In response to these needs, the NPS partnered with the Eppley Institute to create the Facility Manager Leaders Program (FMLP). Now in its ninth year, this award-winning program continues to evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of facility management professionals in the National Park Service.
In April, 19 students graduated and became part of a Community of Practice that includes former students, mentors, and instructors who are working to increase the level of professionalism and leadership in the facility management division of the National Park Service.
In May, a new class of students and mentors begin their journey in learning about facilities, asset management, and leadership. A few of us recently returned from Savannah, Georgia, where we began working with the new students and mentors in the week-long Principles of Asset Management course.
