NPS Asset Priority Index

The Need

The National Park Service (NPS) has over 60,000 assets in its portfolio. These assets range from historic landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Independence Hall to comfort stations at remote park units. The NPS required a tool to compare the relative importance of assets within a park unit, across NPS regions, and Servicewide. The Eppley Institute partnered with Booze Allen Hamilton and the NPS to revise the Asset Priority Index (API) in order to improve its applicability in the Service.

The Solution

In working on this project team, Eppley took the lead in representing park management issues, proxies, and realistic measurements of asset importance and use levels. The Eppley Institute:

  • Conducted a park management needs analysis
  • Designed a pilot program and revised data for granularity, validity, and reliability
  • Created recommended business practices for the implementation of the API
  • Led the way in developing a web-based computer application design, and
  • Crafted an e-learning course for the implementation of the API.

The Result

Through the Eppley/Booze Allen Hamilton/NPS partnership, the National Park Service has been able to lead the Department of the Interior in the implementation and full use of an Asset Priority Index Servicewide.
