Eppley is collaborating with the County Parks Department of Montgomery County, Maryland to build an online course for managing deer populations on public lands. The Lottery-Based Managed Deer Hunting Program will be a required e-course for any hunters on Montgomery County Parks Department lands, who will help manage the deer population in this urban area. Deer populations across much of Montgomery County have reached levels that exceed the capacity for sustainability of the natural environment (Biological Carrying Capacity) as well as the capacity for tolerance by citizens residing in the county (Cultural Carrying Capacity). The Montgomery County Parks Department is part of the five-time Gold Medal Award Winning Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Agency.
Managed hunting programs are directed by the Department’s Natural Resources Stewardship Section and participants are required to follow strict safety and procedural guidelines. State and local laws are met and/or exceeded throughout each of the Managed Deer Hunting Programs. The course will be launched this fall as part of five online courses for the agency.
