Interpretation Courses Update

September 19, 2016

Some big changes are coming your way in our suite of interpretation courses! The Eppley Institute recently formalized our partnership with the National Association for Interpretation, and as part of that, we are working to update and revise our interpretation e-courses for a broader audience of interpreters. The courses being impacted and their changes include:

  • Interpretive Talk and Conducted Activities will be combined into a single e-course.interp_update
  • Informal Visitor Contacts is being rewritten, and the new course will be called Roving and Informal Interpretation.
  • Interpretive Writing is being rewritten, and the new course will include content on social media.
  • Media Fundamentals for Interpreters is being rewritten, and will also include information on social media.
  • Training and Coaching Interpreters is being rewritten as two separate courses: one that focuses on training, and one that focuses on coaching.

We are working on the changes and revisions now through the end of the year. We anticipate having new courses available beginning January 2017. Looking toward the spring, we will be using these new courses to develop an interpretation certificate program in 2017. If you have any questions about the courses or certificate program, please contact Eppley Institute Project Manager Layne Elliott at laynelli@indiana.edu.

I am 68 years old and have worked in the Vermont State Park System for the last four years as a volunteer and as a paid staff. I have decided the position I wish to persue is an Interpretation appoinment. I wish to take advantage of your e courses in interpretation.

I saw your post about the new interpretation courses you are developing with the National Association for Interpretation. I have been a member in the past and I have been a Certified Interpretive Guide. I have a M.A. in American history and desire to work at a park, historic site, or museum. Will you tell me how to get involved and let me know what I need to do in the meantime. I should tell you I am about fifty but, I am willing to take an entry level position or relocate (I would prefer the American west myself) but, anywhere is fine. I am willing to learn new things and being single gives me the freedom to go wherever I need to. Age should not be a deterrent, I expect to be active till I drop. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you and have a great day.

Please keep me up on what is going on. I have been volunteering several years in the park system and enjoy interp most. Want to improve my skills and continue.

What about those of us who have already paid for a course that is set to change? Personally, I have several courses that are set to have changes made that I have not yet completed. For two courses being combined will we receive financial credit and be able to choose a new course? For a single course being broken into two will we have to pay for the second course or will we receive both since the original was paid for?

    – Thank You

    * All the courses being affected I have already paid for, some I have competed.

If we already signed up for and took a course, like Media Fundamentals or Interpretive Writing, will we be able to access the changed version, or will we have to apply for and pay for the new version?
